Why Alpaca Wool?
A smarter wool
First a little clarification:
It's called alpaca wool, but it's actually alpaca fiber, which is simply the hair of the alpaca. They're so thin and have a lot in common with wool, so for the sake of simplicity, we also call it alpaca wool.
Alpaca fiber a.k.a. alpaca wool
Alpaca fiber is often called the fiber of the Gods as in the ancient Inca culture it was reserved only for royalty. Wool from alpaca is soft, luxurious and sustainable. Alpaca fiber provides a naturally silky soft and comfortable feeling to the skin.
Alpaca wool vs merino wool
Yarn from alpaca fiber, which we call alpaca wool, is spun from single hairs. You can expect to keep an alpaca garment for many, many years.
Alpaca yarn can, by and large, be used for the same purposes as merino wool yarn.
Natural Colors
Alpaca has 22 natural colors that are divided into around 250 different shades. It is the natural colors of each individual alpaca that determine the color and shade of the garments - no two garments are exactly alike.
Alpaca wool is super soft
Take a look at an alpaca and you'll see that they are as "fluffy" as they can get! Wool is measured by the diameter of the fiber, which is measured in microns (micrometers). The thinner the fiber, the softer the wool.
These are the main types:
| Quality | Diameter |
|---|---|
| Royal Alpaca | <18 microns |
| Super Fine Alpaca | <20 microns |
| Baby Alpaca | <23 microns |
| Fine Alpaca | <25 microns |
| Medium Alpaca | <30 microns |
| Strong Alpaca | >30 microns |
